Graphic designers are visual communicators who create concepts to inform and influence audiences by using technology, art, and mixed media. They inspire, inform, and captivate consumers and viewers through images, words, or graphics. As a student in the Division of Graphic Communication, faculty will help you enhance your artistic talents by introducing you to design principles, techniques, tools, and color theory. Through hands-on learning opportunities, students demonstrate and practice what they’ve learned by using different print and digital processes to perform assigned projects, support student media on campus, and contribute to external organizations.
After you take classes in the liberal arts, you can tackle courses in advertising, package design, web design and more. Throughout the program, you’ll assemble a professional design portfolio through a capstone project.
In the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication Living Learning Community (LLC), you can live and work with other graphic design students. As you work on projects like developing marketing campaigns for internal and external opportunities, designing pages and artwork for The FAMUAN and Journey (our award-winning student-run newspaper and magazine), or creating visual elements for FAMU TV-20 and J-School Journals, you will develop an impressive, career-building portfolio.
