Chandra LaNier

Professor Chandra LaNier is elated to be joining Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication as a Visiting Assistant Professor and to serve as advisor for FAMU ABJ and Journey Magazine.

Professor LaNier received both her Bachelor of Science in Electronic Media Production and her Master of Arts in Media Management from Kent State University. As an undergraduate she served as the President of the university’s National Association of Black Journalist chapter.  During her junior year, she was initiated into the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and served as the organization’s First Vice President. She also taught a TV studio production class through the Pan-African Studies Department.

The Ohio native began her professional career in New York City under the Viacom umbrella in the CBS Page Program where she worked on, BET’s 106 & Park, CBS’s Early Show and CBS News Productions. After completing the Page Program she was hired as an Associate Producer with CBS News Productions working on documentaries.

Staying within the Viacom family, Professor LaNier became a Segment Producer for Downtown Island, an international show produced by MTV’s Caribbean channel, Tempo. She joined entertainment lawyer, Sean Joel Johnson to BETJ where she was promoted to Producer over music countdown show The JList and current-affairs talk show My Two Cents! She would go on to produce biopics of Wyclef Jean, Ne-Yo, Common, Tyson Bedford, Hill Harper, Terrence Howard and Maxwell for the shows Leading Men and Leading Women. Her Dr. Maya Angelou and India Arie profiles for Leading Women were nominated for NAACP Image Awards.

Professor Lanier also produced segments for Black Enterprise’s nationally syndicated shows, Black Enterprise Business Report and Our World. She also produced tribute videos for the publications Women of Power Conference interviewing Alexis Herman, Dr. Mary Berry Frances, B. Smith, Bethann Hardison and Dr. Jocelyn Elders among others.

She had the privilege of working as a general assignment one-man-band reporter for FiOS 1 News covering the New York City metropolitan areas. After her time as on-air talent, Professor LaNier became a Booking Producer for Arise TV’s show, Arise America with Debbye Turner Bell.

Professor LaNier went on to work for ZaZoom Media Group out of New York City where she wrote, voiced and edited one-minute news clips and evergreen stories for, USA Today and TIME Magazine. Simultaneously, she was an Adjunct Professor at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY where she taught TV Production…until moving to Houston, TX.  In Texas, she continued to work remotely for Zazoom Media Group until relocating to Tallahassee, FL.

Some of the many highlights in Professor LaNier’s career are having breakfast with Harry Belafonte and photographing him for the Amsterdam News, performing in The Vagina Monologues alongside Kerry Washington and Jacque Reid and interviewing Dr. Dorothy Irene Height for Black Enterprise’s Women of Power Conference.

In her personal life, Professor LaNier married her college sweetheart, Mr. Shannon LaNier. They have three beautiful children, Madison, McKenzie and Carter. LaNier is an active member of her family’s community serving as a Girl Scout Troop leader in New York, Texas and now Florida. She is also an active member of the PTA/PTO.

For the North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Theta Sorority, Inc., she served as Fundraising Chair, Historian, 35th Anniversary Chair and served on numerous committees.  For the organization, she produced the NY Metro Area Founders Day Luncheon video, Delta Day at the United Nations video, the NY Metro Area Centennial Torch Video and the Eastern Regional Luncheon video. Professor LaNier also produced the Greater Hudson Valley Links 25th Anniversary video in 2015.

Professor LaNier currently serves as a board member for Destiny’s Daughters, a therapeutic spiritual mentoring program dedicated to the personal transformation, holistic development and self-empowerment of young women and girls. She is CPR/First Aid and Mental Health First Aid certified.

Professor LaNier looks forward to joining the FAMULY and sharing her knowledge and expertise with the University’s greatest treasures and the reasons why we do what we do—the students.
