Admission Requirements
All applicants must first meet all graduate admission requirements set by Florida A&M University. The application deadlines are April 1(fall semester) and November 1 (spring semester). A complete application will include the following materials.
Freshman applicants
When applying to Florida A&M University, freshman candidates may indicate the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication by choosing journalism, public relations, or graphic communication as a major of choice.
Journalism Majors
The programs within the Division of Journalism are considered Limited Access Programs at Florida A&M University. This means that SJGC admission standards are higher than the university’s. Available freshmen seats may be limited and access to those seats is competitively based on high school performance. Specifically, freshmen applicants to the Division of Journalism must have a 2.5 high school GPA and a minimum 1010 SAT/ 21 ACT score.
Freshmen applicants who do not meet these requirements, but have been accepted into the university, must complete 30-35 semester hours in general education requirement courses, maintain a 2.5 overall GPA, and earn at least a 2.5 GPA in freshman English composition courses to be admitted as a journalism major.
Transfer Students
A transfer is any student who has attended a college/university and has earned 12 or more semester hours. SJGC will accept a maximum of six credit hours from a non-accredited journalism/mass communication program and up to 12 credit hours from accredited programs at the discretion of the dean.
New Student Orientation
The orientation process is the first step toward becoming a full-fledged college student. The university’s New Student Orientation program is held every summer for an exciting 2-3 day intellectual, cultural, and social experience. An exciting one-day New Student Orientation is held during the spring. During this time, first-year and transfer students who have been admitted into the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication will be advised by an experienced academic advisor. Registration is required. Visit the NSO website for dates and more information. Note: All undeclared majors who have completed 0-30 credit hours must be advised through the Academic Advisement Center.
Scholarships & Aid
The SJGC Scholarship Program fosters academic excellence by awarding high achievers who are currently enrolled or seeking enrollment as journalism and graphic communication majors at Florida A&M University. All applicants must have a FASFA on file in the FAMU Office of Financial Aid. Awards may not be transferred to other universities or to other colleges/schools at FAMU.
