Investigative Reporters and Editors to Hold “IRE on Campus” Event at FAMU SJGC

Knight Chair Speaker Series Week of Workshops to Train Students in Investigative Reporting Techniques

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2021) – The Knight Chair Speaker Series will be returning this February virtually, with the “IRE on Campus” event. The series of workshops will be led by the Investigative Reporters and Editors, a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. The workshops will take place between Feb. 8-12, 2021.

Florida A&M University students in the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication will have the ability to learn about a variety of investigative reporting techniques, including making effective use of social media, watchdog journalism, data reporting, using documents and multiplatform investigations.

“Due to COVID, we missed the chance to have the Knight Chair Speaker Series last year, but I am hoping all of our students here in SJGC take advantage of this year’s opportunity to obtain more knowledge about investigative reporting techniques that can help them tell important stories in our communities,” said Prof. Francine Huff, Knight Chair for Student Achievement and host of the Knight Chair Speaker Series. “We have a great lineup of speakers from several prominent news organizations.”

The speakers include Sarah Hutchins, training director for IRE; Corey Johnson of the Tampa Bay Times; of The New York Times; and Megan Luther, formerly of InvestigateTV.

“The IRE on Campus program is about building the next generation of investigative journalists and ensuring that our newsrooms are as diverse as the communities they serve,” said Hutchins. “We're excited to work with the students and faculty at Florida A&M on this critical mission.” Investigative Reporters and Editors will raffle off 25 free memberships for students and faculty who attend the sessions.

The “Hands-On Data Training” workshop taking place Friday, Feb. 12, is capped at 20 people, so students must pre-register. The other events throughout the week are open to all students, who can obtain the full schedule and Zoom information at the following link: https://famusjgc.com/ire-on-campus/
